And, beyond even these perils, Vittorio faces being torn apart by a dangerous love. ![]() But though he has been saved from death by a mysterious woman, he finds himself at the mercy of demonic, bloody nightmares, war and political intrique. Escaping to the Florence of Cosimo de Medici, he seeks vengeance and retribution. ![]() Sixteen years old, Vittorio is the sole survivor of a bizarre and violent massacre at his father's Tuscan palazzo. Description In 2010's Frank: The Voice, James Kaplan, in rich, distinctive, compulsively-readable prose, told the story of Frank Sinatra's meteroic rise to fame, subsequent failures, and reinvention as a star of the stage and screen. ![]() Like Peter Guralnick on Elvis, Kaplan goes behind the legend to give us the man in full, in his many guises and aspects: peerless singer, (sometimes) powerful actor, business mogul, tireless lover and associate of the powerful and infamous. Positioning Statement Just in time for the Chairman's centennial, the endlessly absorbing sequel to James Kaplan's bestselling Frank: The Voice-finally the definitive biography that Frank Sinatra, justly termed "The Entertainer of the Century," deserves and requires. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments The story of art by eh gombrich![]() ![]() The book covers most of the world and includes both famous and not so famous artists. My version is separated into 27 chapters, each focusing on a different movement or time period. Gombrich takes the reader on an unforgettable journey through the different ages, explaining how art adapted for different purposes, how artists experimented and how other nations and generations influenced the next stage in the history of art. From there we learn about Ancient Egyptian art, then travel to more adventurous art in Greece. We learn about how art was born, how it changed, when it was stifled and when it thrived. I can’t say that I’m now an expert, but this book has given me a well-rounded introduction to the history of art, starting with the cave paintings of the prehistoric and primitive peoples. It’s taken awhile, but I’ve finally managed to read the whole book. ![]() She passed it on to me about eight years ago, when I expressed an interest in art history. There are many different editions of The Story of Art, but I’m happy with my slightly scruffy twelfth-edition, which my mum received for Christmas in 1975. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Incandescent knights rebels mc![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() ![]() True, she might have been more comfortable on London’s docks than in its ballrooms, but Hattie’s impressive collection of life experience lacked anything close to a criminal element. In point of fact, Henrietta Sedley would never have described such a scenario as a likelihood. With such an obscure and uncommon collection of knowledge, one might imagine that Henrietta Sedley would have known precisely what to do in the likelihood she discovered a human male bound and unconscious in her carriage. She’d been able to do that for as long as she could remember. ![]() And perhaps first on the list of things she had learned in her lifetime was how to tie a Carrick bend knot. An important addendum to that particular lesson was this: The best of allies was often the best of friends. Coachmen tended to talk a fine game when it came to keeping secrets, but they were ultimately beholden to those who paid their salaries. She’d also learned that any decent escape from her Mayfair home required the cover of darkness and a carriage driven by an ally. A woman never knew when she might require a bit of rope, or a knife to cut it. ![]() She’d learned, for example, that if a lady could not get away with wearing trousers (an unfortunate reality for the daughter of an earl, even one who had begun life without title or fortune), then she should absolutely ensure that her skirts included pockets. September 1837 Mayfair In twenty-eight years and three hundred and sixty-four days, Lady Henrietta Sedley liked to think that she’d learned a few things. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Looking good dead book review![]() Enjoy more of the Brighton detective’s investigations with Not Dead Enough and Dead Man's Footsteps. Overall, Looking Good Dead feels a little more lighthearted than Im guessing James intended it to be, and a bit more school-play than youd want from a serious. But when they plan the murder of the Bryce family, it’s not just revenge – it’s entertainment.Īlthough the Roy Grace novels can be read in any order, Looking Good Dead is the second gripping title in the bestselling series. Learning that Tom has made a statement to Grace’s team, the killers have to act. But this attempted act of kindness makes him the sole witness to that same vicious murder. When a young woman’s body is found butchered in Brighton, Roy Grace cannot help but think of his own missing wife and her unsolved fate.Įlsewhere in the city, when Tom Bryce finds a disc left on a train, he simply tries to do the right thing – return it to its owner. ![]() Now a major ITV series, Grace, adapted for television by screenwriter Russell Lewis and starring John Simm. It strays away from focusing on solid characterisation and direction to instead shove in peculiar jokes, perplexing side-narratives, and while pulling the wool over the audience for one twist. ![]() ![]() ![]() Detective Superintendent Roy Grace has to solve a disturbing murder whilst protecting an innocent eye witness, in this TV tie-in edition of Looking Good Dead, by award winning crime author Peter James. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Satrapi![]() This curiosity is reinforced perfectly in fig.4. Even though Marji associated the veil negatively, the Iranian government saw women wearing the veil as an embodiment of cultural authenticity - an expression of Iranian and Islamic culture, rather than repression (Begolo 3). ![]() ![]() ![]() Marji also does not want to associate herself with the regime nor does she want to adopt any of its principles - including wearing the veil she does not want her class photo to be of her wearing a symbol of conformity and obedience. A significant part of the caption reads, “I’m sitting on the far left so you don’t see me.” Satrapi has deliberately cropped herself out from the class photo, with just her left arm showing, for two particular reasons: To stress the idea that they all look exactly the same with the veil on - they are all just as faceless and insignificant as each other so it simply wouldn’t matter if she was in the photo of not. This is further elaborated in the next panel, fig.2. She has been forced to wear a perceivably thick, black veil, and shows no enthusiasm about it. ![]() One of the most telling panels, this depicts a somber Marjane (or Marji as she is known throughout Persepolis), looking directly at the reader, as a prisoner would silently crying for help, with her arms tightly folded as if to physically close her body off from the world. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Research has shown that as social creatures, our genetic make-up is wired to thrive on interdependence rather than independence and solitude. In doing so we then disregard the complexity of how people and issues are. We sort people reflexively, thinking this makes it easier for us to build bonds amongst those like us. G – generosity in allowing for the kindest interpretation of what has been said.īrené invites us to take BRAVING out into the world around us, especially in contexts that have become increasingly fragmented and on topics such as politics. Brené shares the acronym of B-R-A-V-I-N-G to describe the qualities necessary for establishing this container of trust in relationships, with ourselves or with others. ![]() What enables this process of recognizing our shared humanity is the creation of a sacred container, within which bold conversations of authenticity can take place. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The point, Ms Steinem, is this: we poor benighted creatures on this side of the Atlantic have never had the chance to read you before and that, on the evidence of this impressively rich collection, has been our loss.Īnd yet O utr ageo u s Ac t s a nd Ever yd a y R e b e lli o n s i s a book, as much epic as it is autobiography. Having admitted in the introduction to this edition of her collected journalism that activism is not altogether to blame, she comes to the rather defensive conclusion, ‘What is so sacred about a long and continuous piece of writing?’ Good question, on the face of it. Co-founder of both New Y o r k and M s magazines, she had earned her living mainly as a journalist and, latterly, by lecturing. She has been much too busy campaigning – mainly for feminism, although Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern have also earned her support. ![]() |
